Six years ago, Karen Febus broke out a sheet of paper and sketched out the playbook for a staffing firm that would “bridge the gap between people and technology.”
A lot of people told Febus she was crazy when she set out to start her own staffing firm amid a global pandemic. Now, her firm, Shift Fillers, sits atop SIA’s 2026 list of Fastest-Growing US Staffing Firms behind the same mission she scribed by hand in 2020.
“There was something just telling me, ‘Why not?’ I guess that risk has paid off,” she says. “It’s a combination of technology, data and analytics as well as people and how we treat them.”
Shift Fillers, based in New Jersey, specializes in manufacturing and logistics with high-volume clients in the US and Canada. For many of these businesses, Shift Fillers is the sole workforce provider, according to Febus, using a vendor-on-premise model that creates strong relationships with clients and adaptability to their specific needs.
Shift Fillers Chief Visionary Officer Dan Mastropolo says, “We work on the principle that, to get tech adoption, you need tech and people working together.”
Febus, who serves as the firm’s COO, believes this approach, along with the firm’s investments in technology, has not only given Shift Fillers an edge over competitors but also enabled the firm to build the trust and reputation required to drive growth.
“We don’t have a lot of vendor competition because of the model that we’ve used,” Mastropolo says. “When you blend our on-site methodology plus the technical enhancements … it’s allowed us to be very nimble.”
While the company credits its growth in part to its reputation, a good reputation only goes so far. At the end of the day, Shift Fillers has grown because of its results, Febus says.
“What I’ve seen in the space is, when you get to some of these large accounts and there’s multiple suppliers … they cannot be sure of what their fill rate is on a regular basis. We actually can [demonstrate fill rates],” Febus says. “We’re not using hope as a strategy. We’re using data and predictable information.”
Febus’ people-first philosophy stemmed from working in human resources for over a decade. She took note of how companies both succeeded and failed through the “ebbs and flows of employment.” Those lessons are one reason why Shift Fillers has grown during a time where the economy and the labor market and been tricky to navigate.
Still, at the core of Shift Fillers’ growth is its original goal of applying technology with people in mind.
Technology doesn’t understand an organization’s internal operations, Febus says. “We are very intentional. … We understand how to apply that knowledge.”
At annual strategy meetings, Febus still pulls out that sheet of paper with her early vision for Shift Fillers scrawled on it. A lot of tech-savvy leaders would have turned the piece of parchment into a PowerPoint presentation by now, but this one does things a little differently.
Looking back, Febus is proud Shift Fillers has come so far without straying from the concept she knew could set the firm apart.
